Centauri Conglomerate

Background

Formed from the original exploration companies that exploited the first colonies on Alpha Centauri, the original companies, Mizu Zaibatsu, NASA Corp and Solartech have now disappeared as separate entities, but their corporate philosophies have remained in the political life of the Conglomerate.

The Centauri are very commercially minded and strong believers in small government and the supremacy of market forces.

They understand the need for interstellar cooperation, especially since the Exterminator Threat had a serious impact on trade and commerce.

However, the Conglomerate has few executive powers over it’s own polity – so there are practical limits to what it can sign up to. As a result Centauri Fleets are separate private enterprise-owned entities.
The force level and composition is not usually set by the Government other than in the Schedule of Requirements in the Fleet Operating COntracts - which generally outlines the mission rather than specific cxforce composition. , and they are astrographically limited.
Under this system the Conglomerate cannot easily move fleets from one quadrant to another – this would require a complex series of new contracts.
In addition, it is a matter of firm policy that each quadrant be economically self-sufficient. The Centauri will never transfer resources to bail out a quadrant that is in deficit.

However, as befits a trading nation, limitations such as those above do not restrict haggling and negotiating or even being economical with the truth if it will benefit the shareholders.

The government is also keen to maximise economic opportunities for Centauri corporations. It will try to ensure that Centauri worlds host major conferences, establishments or events, bringing in business and foreign exchange.
