Knight Protectors of the Great Kingdom

Paramilitary organisation in the Wolf359 Commonwealth

KPGK

The KPGK as they are more commonly known, were formed over two centuries ago in 3002. Their remit is to defend the King, parliament and the Wolf Home systems.
The original intention was to effectively setup a home fleet that would always be present no matter what, as no 'damn fool admiral could reassign it on a whim.'

The KPGK perform important ceremonial functions when the king travels abroad or greets dignitaries at the palace, supplying honour guards etc.
It should also be noted that the KPGK have no equivalent rank structure to other services as their structure is unique.

Ever since they were formed though, they have had to struggle for their existence. Their first responsibility is to the king, and this tends to make parliament nervous. (They find the idea of royalty having it's own personal battle fleet over which parliament has no real control unsettling.) Thus funding has often been erratic.

Military Capability

Because of this, the KPGK currently has no working interstellar capable ships. It has two old battleships with interstellar capability, but their engines need complete replacement before that is achievable.
The KPGK has another problem in that it doesn't actually recruit. Instead it is supposed to just ask the other services for staff and the other services are supposed to supply their best and bravest, thus making the KPGK an elite force.
In practice of course the other services use this as a way of getting rid of their incompetents and undesirables.

There have been periodic calls for the KPGK to be disbanded, but the king is very fond of them and spent many years been trying to get the law changed so that they coud have regular funding and recruitment like the other services.
His Majesty got his way early in 3200 when the KPGK started receiving new batches of Interplanetary Battleships. Importantly these were stationed not only at Wolf359, but also at other key Q0 home systems, for the first time.

The KPGK had a surge of recruitment starting in 3200 and its effectiveness as certainly improved as a result, though its reputation with the other services remains poor.

Training

KPGK personnel are trained for positions on spacecraft as well as for ground combat. This gives maximum flexibility to the KPGK command.
For example, depending on the mission, a Senior Protector could be leading a group of pacifiers, captaining a starship or leading a large body of men on a planet's surface.
The KPGK service is thus very demanding on its personnel, despite still being looked down on by the other services.
