**Professor Halvik Rens** was a cyberneticist and artificial intelligence researcher best known for a series of controversial experiments into machine cognition and human-machine integration. In 3240, while working under contract to the **White Advancement Confederacy** on **[Z130]**, Rens disappeared in circumstances that remain unexplained.

Born in 3193, Rens trained initially in neurological engineering before moving into computational cybernetics. Their early academic work concentrated on artificial sensory systems, replacement neural pathways and adaptive prostheses. Rens subsequently became interested in whether complex cybernetic systems could develop responses not explicitly anticipated by their designers.

During the 3220s, Rens acquired a reputation for operating close to the legal boundaries governing artificial intelligence research. Experiments included self-modifying prosthetic control software, synthetic neural tissue linked to computational systems, and autonomous medical devices capable of independently revising treatment routines. Particularly controversial was the **Continuity Project**, which attempted to construct functioning computational models from detailed recordings of human neurological activity. Rens insisted these were simulations rather than artificial minds.

Several institutions subsequently withdrew support. Critics alleged that some experimental systems had demonstrated behaviour sufficiently sophisticated to require destruction under anti-AI legislation. No conclusive evidence that Rens created a sentient AI was made public, and formal investigations produced no major conviction.

By the late 3230s, Rens increasingly depended upon private and colonial sponsorship. They eventually accepted a research contract with the **White Advancement Confederacy on [Z130]**, where work reportedly concerned advanced cybernetic control and neural simulation.

Rens disappeared during 3240. Their accommodation was abandoned and significant quantities of research data were reportedly unaccounted for. No confirmed death, departure or subsequent location has been established. The disappearance generated considerable speculation, particularly given Rens’s scientific reputation, although no evidence has publicly demonstrated that illegal AI research was responsible.
