aka Private Military Contractors

Mercenaries are in widespread use in all quadrants. Most extensively within the Centauri Conglomerate whose entire armed forces are privatised - making them all, in effect, mercenaries.
In addition there are many smaller contractors operating who provide ad-hoc security, training and support for military operations to colonies who cannot afford to maintain permanent (and expensive) military capabilities themselves
